Aoywaan Riverside Thai Cuisine first opened its doors in 2014 as a cooking school and tour company for those seeking a truly unique and authentic Thai experience. Beautifully situated on the Tha Chin river, it offered an escape from the fast pace of Bangkok to those seeking private lessons in traditional Thai cuisine. Soon after its opening, Aoywaan grew to include a full service restaurant. The restaurant quickly became recognized for their elegantly-plated Thai food with bright and clean flavors.
The vision and success of Aoywaan comes from its founder and owner, Aoy. Having grown up in a large family in the same neighborhood where Aoywaan is today, Aoy recalls being awoken every morning to the sound of her mother’s cooking- the pounding of curry pastes, the scraping of coconut flesh, and the metal on metal sounds of the wok.
The name Aoywaan comes from the combination of her name Aoy, meaning sugar cane and her mother’s Waan, meaning sweet. After university, Aoy led tour groups around Europe before settling in Austria where she fell in love with the colorful and intricate plating and high levels of service at Europe’s top restaurants. She was inspired to recreate the dishes she grew up with, making them her own. After thirteen years, Aoy returned home and founded Aoywaan to share her love for food and life to others.
Aoywaan has been featured on many food programs and honored with a number of awards for its distinctive approach to Thai cuisine. In 2023, Aoy won the battle at famous TV program, Iron Chef Thailand, under the theme of “Thai Food”.
